A non-shock situation along the Potomac makes for an excellent read.

A Virginia state senator found headstones on his property. It brought to light a historic injustice in D.C., by Gregory Schneider, WaPo

Of COURSE it was a historic black cemetery that was (not well) dug up to make way for development, and of COURSE the markers were sold as scrap and used for riprap along the Potomac farm this senator purchased. When he found the some of the tombstones, he got busy, and the Virginia/Maryland governments and non-profits got together to fix the situation. Inspiring in result; disgusting in cause.

If they wanted a policy of deterrence (which I disagree with) I could at least accept it if it were directed at only adults. But making children suffer separation as a “deterrent method” is sick and inhumane.

And every one of those separated children should be hung around a Republican’s neck to remind us of the party that backed this policy.

I think he just tipped his hand there: he is going to try and claim massive voter fraud and destroyed/lost ballots and produce enough “evidence” to get Barr to launch an investigation to get results in those states thrown out until neither candidate can claim an EC majority

He’s following the same old cycle: He says something ridiculous and stupid; the right-wing media latch onto it and whip it into a frenzy, with shoddy and dubious reporting and “sources”; it spreads to Facebook and other social media where wingnuts parrot it endlessly; the mainstream media pick it up and do a half-ass job of dragging the story through the mud; but now it’s been promoted by mainstream media, that means it must be true!

I am still looking into this, but a few weeks ago, Jennifer Cohn was quoted on the Sarah Kendzior podcast identifying the Karl Rove ‘fuckery’ number as being about 2.5%. That is, that Karl Rove reportedly said that he could manipulate election results up to about 2.5%. This would match with Rick Wilson’s ‘fuckery’ number that Democrats need to win by over 5% in Florida in order to actually record a win in Florida.

Today, this twitter thread popped up:

(Edit to clarify) TL;DR - Red States appear to be affecting election outcomes by up to 2.5% each way through voter suppression and other dirty tricks. This may be the reason for the differences between polls and ‘official’ results in Red States. Blue states appear to be consistent between polling and results.

In particular this point:

In a similar vein, the MDH (Minnesota Department of Health) said on today’s conference call with the governor that the rural Minnesota counties and young people who believe they are less vulnerable to severe illness are the major cause of community spread in our state. They are pleading with people to try to head off what’s happening in every other state around us by following the rules. In the places that ARE following the rules - the more urban areas - it’s working.

Well when the dentist found a suspicious growth in my inner cheek he had me go to the hospital right away.

A surgeon removed the tumor and I had a course of radiation therapy.

Now if I had a bunch of Pulpit Pimps anoint me with oil and lay their hands on me, Mr. Tumor would have metastasized and I’d be taking a dirt nap.

So all I can say to Rush is…KEEP ON PULPIT PIMPIN’ BOY!

I’M FUCKING DYING OF LAUGHTER HERE!

Bam! Rush Limbaugh Totally Cured Of Stage 4 Lung Cancer By Trump-Loving Preacher!

Rush Limbaugh, as you probably know, has terminal cancer. I don’t think it’s right to say it’s some kind of karma for him being a horrible person, as that would be a pretty big insult to all of the non-horrible people out there who have died of cancer and are nowhere near as evil as Rush Limbaugh, but I sure as hell will not miss him when he’s gone.

But according to Christian Prophet/Kamala Harris Sex Dream Haver Lance Wallnau, the reason Rush is dying is not just because, you know, cancer, but because he was cursed by witches. Probably the same witches who did a spell on the entire country to make us all think racism and sexual assault are real problems we should care about. (Clearly not a very effective spell considering the large percentage of people it didn’t work on.)

Also because the prayers of the 20 million people praying for Limbaugh have just been straight up weaksauce. They are all bad at praying, Wallnau says. Because if they were good at praying, like he is, Rush would be totally cured of cancer by now

Iirc, two incidents were discussed on the podcast. Not a lot of specific geeky technical stuff was discussed. (I did network security programming for many years.)

Most of the podcast discussion seemed directed at behind the scenes changing of the data. The twitter thread talks instead about administrative actions to affect the ability of citizens to actually vote.

Please note that Jennifer Cohn has been arguing that election hacking has been a major problem since at least 2016. And she has not been able to gain a lot of traction among other data scientist election watchers.

First [incident discussed in the podcast], was an election in Ohio where the main election server had a sudden outage during the ballot counting and everything was routed to an out of state, privately owned server. When the results were published, suddenly the numbers had changed in favor of the Republicans.

Second [incident discussed in the podcast], was the incident in 2012 where Karl Rove had a meltdown on tv as the results remained in favor of the Democrats despite his predictions.

The specific podcast is:

re: #89 nines09

In order:

1) economy is worst shape in decades. Millionaires like Trump are making out like robber barons while everyone else is scraping by.
2) covid19 pandemic response has wiped out gains by women. Women are disproportionately hit by the job losses and need for child care, education of kids, etc.
3) unemployment for persons of color is higher than when Trump inherited the strong and stable economy from President Obama.

4) North Korea is working on missiles and nukes without a deal. Trump got a photo op.
5) ISIS is resurgent across the Middle East
6) Israel-Arab normalization is a cover for arms deals to thwart a resurgent Iran that is working on its nuclear program thanks to Trump shredding the JCPOA. Everyone in region is worried about Iran, so they’re going to Israel and the US for missile defense systems to protect themselves from an Iranian threat.

7) Stock market has barely risen from where Trump inherited from President Obama. Trump’s stock market gains were essentially nullified by his disastrous covid19 response.
8) Far more were pushed/shoved into poverty thanks to Trump’s disastrous covid19 response. 50 million were unemployed by Trump’s failed policies. About half have managed to get jobs recovered (return to jobs previously held). Many jobs will never come back because the businesses themselves went bankrupt.

7) Stock market has barely risen from where Trump inherited from President Obama. Trump’s stock market gains were essentially nullified by his disastrous covid19 response.

From inauguration day to today:
Dow Jones rose from 19,827 to 27,685
S&P rose from 2,271 to 3,400

So both indices did ok during the 45 months Trump has been in office.

Olivia Nuzzi has an excellent look at the “tortured self-justification of one very powerful Trump-loathing anonymous Republican.”

Said the Republican of President Trump: “I thought he would lose! I mean, everyone thought he would lose. The idea that he won is still shocking. This is a man who is so completely alien to what this country — the best principles of what this country is about. When I think about the fact that a hundred years from now, people will look back and say, ‘How the fuck did they think this was normal?,’ it makes me sad for the country. He’s a permanent scar on the face of our country.”

coward

and ps - he is not alien. this country has always been about white nationalism and oppression of those who are not white and male (and propertied). it’s been a struggle since the beginning

Every last one. Never forget. Even if it takes decades. Find entry last one of these monsters and hold them accountable. NEVER give them a moment of peace as they look over their shoulders wondering if today is the day they’ll lose jobs, social standing and (God willing) freedom.

Everybody call your congresscritters and senators after the election and tell them that justice needs to be done, the law needs to be upheld, and that this cancer needs to be cut out or this will happen yet again. It didn’t happen after Watergate, it didn’t happen after Iran-Contra, and it didn’t happen after Iraq, and here we are.

(Ugh. Get a grip, Nicolle.)

Claire McCaskill, with absolutely no fucks to give, on Peggy Noonan’s bullshit piece.

“She said at the end of that, you didn’t read the very last part of that paragraph, Nicolle, because she said [of Harris] ‘it is embarrassing,’” said McCaskill. “No, Peggy, I’ll tell you what is embarrassing. Listen up Peggy, a president that pays off porn stars, a president that pulls babies out of the arms of their mothers, a president who likes to grab women by the you-know-what. A president who uses the White House for campaign events. A president who praises white supremacists. And yes, even a president who can’t dance, doesn’t know how to show joy or empathy and tries to do some kind of ridiculous arm thrust to YMCA. That is what is embarrassing. Kamala Harris is anything but embarrassing. She is uplifting. She’s inspirational. She’s strong and substantial and she’s going to be one hell of a vice president.”

72F is the temp… a nice day you might say. Sure, 72F is a good temp for outdoor working or even sleeping. But at 7% RH and gusty winds, it’s chilly to me.

It’s the humidity that counts.

Don’t get me wrong, Nicolle was blasting Noonan for the column, but that fan-girl line just made me want to puke.

It’s entirely possible that as Wallace was earning her journo spurs that Nooners could have indeed been a role-model/hero to her and sometimes those mythical scales take time to fall and go away completely. So she may forever have slack to give, but Wallace has been consistently on the side of sanity for a while now and even if she doesn’t embrace the left with full fervor, I will happily accept “fair”. Fair seems to be some kind of Avalon for these folks, never attainable it seems.

doesn’t seem like she’s letting Nooners off the hook here:

You and me both. Sarah Palin helped unleash the unadulterated lunacy on the right.

Nicole was not involved in selecting Sarah as McCain’s running mate; I don’t know how accurate the move “Game Change” was, but according to the film, she became disillusioned with Sarah fairly early on. It’s not her fault that Steve Schmidt et al chose Palin.

I cut Nicolle a lot of slack, because she has been pretty consistently open about how horrible the Republicans are (I feel the same way about Jennifer Rubin as well, because she’s not just anti-Trump, but rather brutal about Republicans in general.)

It was just Nicolle’s reverential tone about Noonan that got me—all the more because I’ve always thought Noonan was a snotty, obnoxious asshole.

If truth and justice emerge triumphant with the November 3 election — WH, Senate, and House all firmly in Democratic hands — there will likely be an expansion of SCOTUS, unless 2 of the GOP judges depart the bench. For example Kavanaugh forced to resign when it is revealed where he got his money to pay off his debts.

Dropped our ballots off at our usual in-person voting place. Snowing like hell, so we had no wait. Guy checked our names and addresses and in the bin they went. Took about 2 minutes to drop them off.

Glad we did our civic duty.

Drove around the foothills, very pretty indeed. And we saw a couple of deer too.

re: #74 ckkatz

[Embedded content]

This thread is an excellent example of why polls don’t matter. States that have Republicans in charge of their elections will simply make the results whatever they need them to be.

What’s needed is a Constitutional Amendment to ban lifetime appointments of US Justices, and a 20 year maximum term limit, made retroactive.

House Democrats Propose Supreme Court Term Limits, Appointments Schedule, Without Constitutional Amendment

Amidst the latest Supreme Court fight, Rep. Ro Khanna (CA-17) will introduce the Supreme Court Term Limits Act to fundamentally reframe the power of our nation’s highest court. Khanna’s bill would establish 18-year term limits on any Supreme Court Justices approved after his bill’s passage. After their 18-year terms, justices would then be allowed to continue their service on lower courts, as former Justices Souter and O’Connor currently do. Current justices would be exempt from the term limits. Going forward, the bill would then create a regular appointment process to allow every president to nominate a new justice to the Supreme Court during each odd year, guaranteeing each president the opportunity to nominate two justices per four-year term.

Don’t forget the justice department sticking it’s big ugly nose in as well. Our state Supreme Court ruled 5-0 that Foghorn Leghorn (McMaster) could not give covid relief funds to private schools.

The justice department (the US Attorney for South Carolina—a Regents Law graduate, btw) wrote that the Department of Justice is seeking friend of the court status to ask the state State Supreme Court to grant a new hearing to reconsider its decision on the relief funds. McCoy’s filing said the U.S. Department of Education had concluded that it is, in fact, lawful to spend coronavirus relief funds on private and independent schools.

Five to fucking zero. And that’s not good enough for Barr’s justice department. ugh.

But people are getting overly excited about polls that show Biden leading in other “purple” states or even close in TX.

Trumpers who have bought into the idea that mail-in ballots are demon-seed will crawl over broken glass to vote on election day. The Democratic vote count surge from early votes will evaporate (except out here on the left coast.)

As of October 21, more than 3 million young people (ages 18-29) have already voted early or absentee in the 2020 elections, including more than 2 million in 14 key states that may well decide the presidency and control of the United States Senate.

In every state we’re tracking, the number of absentee and early votes cast as of October 21, 2020, is far higher than at the same date in 2016. That’s to be expected, given the greater emphasis on mail-in voting this year due to the pandemic. Still, the numbers are especially dramatic in a state like Texas, where at least 490,000 young people have already cast ballots. Moreover, in Florida, North Carolina, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, early votes cast by youth have already exceeded the 2016 margin of victory in each state.

5/9 judges on the court were appointed by men who won the popular/plurality vote once in their three soon to be four combined elections. 3/9 worked on the Bush campaign’s recount team in 2000. It’s the Republicans that have politicized the courts. The only thing that links Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor is the President is who appointed them to Scotus. Meanwhile most every Republican appointed federal judge has to put on the facade of originism that was first promoted by Bork and later by Scalia and now Thomas.

What’s it going to be like to be Amy Coney Barrett on the court in 20 years, or 30? If all of her supporters are gone, if Trump and Trumpism are written into the history books as failures, if her nomination and confirmation become remembered as a last desperate grab for power by a dying regime…

…how unhappy might she be as a one-dimensional ideologue on a Court and in a world that’s moved on to completely different dimensions?

I hope her Court tenure becomes increasingly unpleasant for her, more and more each year.

And I hope the changes come so fast and so furious that it gets to that point for her sooner than any of us can imagine.

well, if they want to play this scenario out, they seem to forget that in most cases; their side ends up getting hung or shot against a non-descript wall and then stuck in an unmarked grave.

may not happen today, or even tomorrow, but pretty sure we’ve seen this play out enough times in the Philippines, Romania, and Chile and while I am not calling for this to happen, this is where it usually ends up.

My mother was a 50-year nurse - going from the recovery room to administration. She passed away at the beginning of 2019. She remembered the days prior to Roe v Wade. How the rich could complain of monthly “difficulties” and be “examined,” while the poor were left to butchers. Born and raised in North Dakota, she broke from the Republicans when Reagan came along.

My dad was a smart country boy in North Carolina, who would process medical claims as the controller/human resources officer for a 30-person steel company in the 1970s. He knew what a D&C health insurance claim meant.

I honestly believed we would be past all of this crap by now. That science - such as RU-486 - would render the whole abortion debate moot. But I underestimated the power of religious fanaticism and the win-at-all-costs attitude of a political party.

I dropped off my mother’s completed ballot at an open early voting place. It was very well staffed, lots of people coming and going. There were two poll watchers (younger white people, so I’m thinking Not Republicans, especially as they Wore Masks), sitting just outside the 75 foot limit.

Here’s the problem with that. Biden is going to win a lot of states. If some asshole in OH or GA or FL tips the scale and trump loses they are going to be in a lot of legal trouble when Biden takes over. Trump can not win by only cheating in one state. He needs three or four.

I think they know they are losing and don’t give a fuck. they are all looking at big paychecks from their conservative masters. They never really wanted to govern in the rest place, might as well cash in.

They seem to be counting on a huge turnout on Election Day.

I wonder how many of those people are going to want to stand on line for hours to vote…

And I still think Trump will demand that every vote be counted if it looks like he’s losing once returns start coming in.

After 2012 the Republicans had a choice. And they chose to become a party of White supremacists. They could have been de Klerk. Instead they opted for Botha.

This will not end well.

What will prevent them from declaring us “enemy combatants?”

So many authoritarian regimes derived their power from “democratic” means. And the flaws within our Constitution - from the Connecticut Compromise to the Electoral College - will have allowed the unimaginable become reality.
